21 days ago, I started posting my art story book, Forever Dragon, one page per day on the blog. I am here to report that I have managed to keep this up, and have every intention to continue till the story is completed.

My friend, David completed his Swim Across America challenge this morning, see email forward below. I am proud of you, David. Since I could not be in Baltimore to swim, David and others, represent those of us who wish to lend support.

Being part of the champaign to raise $400,000 makes me feel like I was in the water, part of the ocean. Given that about 70 percent of our planet is covered by ocean, I use ocean as metaphore often.

According to the accumulative observation from the past 5,000 years, on that day, the moon will be at her fullest and brightest of the entire year, aka Harvest Moon.

Although you can find tons of information on the internet, none will give you the insights that I can offer. No where else can you get the same Segami interpretation, from both Chinese and American view point.

9 Year After 911

9 years ago this day changed many lives.

9 years ago this day, like many others, I was changed.

I felt the need to be more useful. To make a contribution to mankind. What was I doing being an artist, creating the art that most people said it could not be done? And I was enjoying it all alone. I did not want to be alone any more.

Later on, I turned the PaintingOnWater™ into the speaking business, Making the Impossible Possible. In stead of just talking about the concept, I was able to demonstrate, with show and tell. Now, I take it another step further. I have the audience experience it, do it and sense it themselves, with the message for the Art of Being. I am not alone any more.

9 years ago this day, I was alone at the condo and felt an eerie dead silence. All phone lines were jammed. Skype and Google Voice were not available yet, back then. Let alone any form of social media connection. Unable to reach my parents in Hong Kong, I went down to talk to my doorman, Ken. Someone I can see eye to eye, through my tears. I was glad that he was there. I was not alone any more.

Just called Ken to thank him for being there, 9 years ago. I am going down to give him a hug now.

ACE Workshop

Since the public workshop was announced, here is a report on what happened.

The ACE conference was held from May 6 to 8th in Atlanta, Georgia at Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University, the center for Business Innovation and Creativity. The session was scheduled first thing on Friday morning.

The room was packed with attendees from both business and education sectors. They pushed their own comfort zone. They dared to do something different and innovative. They experienced Painting On Water™ for the first time with an open mind.

When asked why they showed up, they gave the reasons ranging from being curiosity to a deep desire to enhance their innovation and problem solving skills. They laughed, learned and bonded. It sure made it worthwhile to be up early and share with such an enthusiastic group of life-time learners. To all the attendees, thanks for sharing the time together.

Feedback on Team Work

When I first heard “painting on water” I thought the idea was crazy. How can you paint on water?? Not possible. After we had a chance to do it, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Painting individually and in a group was a lot of fun, fostered group work, and learned to do something from a different perspective.

I was introduced to new people I have never met before on campus. It was great working with them and build teamwork. In our life we will have to confront several strangers on our path and work with them. This seminar set an example.

Putting people in separate groups was pretty effective. We were able to learn from each other as well as ourselves from the way we worked together and individually with suminagashi.

Having a whole group try to make one piece of work and throwing the paper was a good way to start (should have been first though). The discussion at the end made a lot of points much clearer/easier to understand. It was good to see the views of the students.

The group painting was effective. Teamwork, creativity, team leadership.

The motivation of the group to build confidence and creatively solve problems. The trust build by Amy and how she was always positive.

Engaging everyone creatively. Working individually then as a group.

The most effective part was the water painting. Everyone was interacting and giving ideas. It was great. Another good activity was graphically representing your problem and throwing it away!

Group painting on water with the help of the motivator because of the conversation. You learn by working and continuing ideas together.

The group painting was similar to above in a group setting. It allowed us for many different perspectives on the same topic/issue; analyzing.

Being able to contribute to a group painting!!!

The group painting activity helped us a lot in understanding team collaborations and the importance of interacting and networking.

Having the groups brainstorming ways to make certain designs with the painting.

The group collaborative painting. It helped us work together and try different techniques and get good painting i.e. good solutions.

Painting on water as a group was great. It made me feel like I was part of a team effort. It was also fun to make art to play around with the process of painting on water. The activities that involved working with our hands were the most effective for me. Everyone got involved and working with our hands ensured that each person had a chance to participate.

Everybody was allowed to express themselves and grow at their own pace. Moreover, we were exposed to different perspectives of the same topic.

The most effective component of the program was the actual painting because it allowed us to get to know and help one another.

Working in groups to create a painting. IT was nice to work in a group and collaborate to achieve creating a neat piece of art

The comparison between the group art and the individual art. I showed how together we could control our work better.

The water painting because in doing it we were able to learn, communicate, and participate with the whole team.

I felt the group paint was very effective with teamwork.

Introducing team aspects into something that is otherwise done individually. I.E. painting on water as a group with one final product

The group creative painting. It facilitated conversation among/between the group members. It makes us apply theories we learned from as a group.

Do something together with new friends. I think teamwork is more effective and happy.

The whole group painting together demonstrated problem solving as well as multiple perspectives. This component let us implement all the tactics we have learned.

Group activity of painting on water was very effective in expanding individual vision as the team could work as a unit while working on and building on each others’ ideas. The outcome was a brilliant masterpiece of individuality.

Collaboration of teammates. Builds confidence in art – this was the 1st time I ever “painted” on water.

BASIC Principals on Creative Problem Solving

The entire group collaborating together, helping each other in their painting. I learned a lot working in a group. The BASIC concept was amazing. The hands on activity made the seminar one of the best I have ever attended.

Personal painting, relating the concepts of painting on water with problem solving in everyday life.

I really enjoyed the opening activity of sketching a problem and crumbling it to throw to the front of the room. I also thought the final group painting was effective about showing the beauty in collaboration. The hands-on activities were great.

The painting on the water was fantastic. It showed ways we needed to deal with the present and unpredictable future. Flexibility.

Watching Amy paint on water with her laptop camera was a great way to show us what we can expect to happen, and then the experience of making the individual artwork was exciting and beneficial toward learning process. I also loved the acronym BASIC! I also liked that we got up and changed tables to work with strangers.
A lesson that nothing is impossible as the word itself says IM possible. Motivation in believing, asking, solving, implementing, and capturing and cheering (BASIC).

Learning by trying out new things hands on is the best, but a lot can be learned by observation as well. The most simple methods and tools can create amazing products with limitless combinations (possibilities). Innovation and creativity – learning the difference between these two.

Making/encouraging us to think of things more graphically to express one.

Feedback on Hand-on Experience Workshop

The fun activities.

Learning by doing and experience, also group prints allowed one to view multiple techniques while doing it. This enabled the immediate application.

The painting was a really unique experience.

The individual painting made you learn by yourself and about yourself; sitting back and analyzing.

The hands-on interaction was beneficial. It was also an interesting perspective on leadership and creativity.

Hands on activity, painting on the water, were a fun learning experience and the analogies made to it were very insightful to other life experiences.

The fact that it was interactive. We actually did the stuff, instead of just listening to someone speak. Very hands-on and definitely tons of fun! I think it was cool because she kind of followed what she believed in terms of the pyramid and learning. You do it, you remember it. Also, each of us did it individually and then as a group. So, we learned new techniques to get different designs and patterns.

I really enjoyed the hands-on activity. I was a different experience and another way to look at situations. Painting on water seems impossible but in reality everything is possible.

Feedback on Overall Workshop

The most effective component of the program was the speaking component. She was very effective when teaching about life lessons and the principles of leadership.

It was unique to paint on water. It was cool to see Asian philosophy. Good to cooperate your personal experiences to the lecture.

Her personal experience with the development of a creative process and how to develop your own creative process. Seeing the art that she personally did inspires my personal endeavors of my own artistic abilities, and connect those relationships between life and art.

Amy Lee Segami was a very inspiring speaker. I am very happy I was able to attend this seminar! Incorporating art and effective team participation really made this memorable. I was able to meet new friends and learn some valuable insight into leadership. I can’t wait till’ the next one!!

Amy Lee Segami related to us from her student days/experiences and could tailor the presentation to be more relevant to us. I really liked that this presentation required much conversation and collaboration of the table groups. My group really got to share our ideas and work together.

The practicality of being able to use different techniques to achieve a creative image on water using very basic and yet powerful tools.

The confidence between leadership and painting on water.

The presenter did a good job giving us new insights and ways to deal with problems creatively. I like how she tied in engineering to art.

Taking a very basic idea of creativity and art, and adding my own uniqueness. After seeing what others did, I was able to add their ideas to my overall project. That’s what leadership is – taking skills, ideas, and critiques from those around you and putting it all together. Each painting was specifically creative to each individual. When we did the group painting, we did something unique from others which allowed us all to contribute our personal styles to it.

Learned how to paint on water which was an entirely new experience and shared new ideas with different people. This program also provided an opportunity to interact with new people and make friends. The instructor also helped us with ways to solve problems with creativity. And I personally got inspiration from Amy Lee Segami.

Thank you for bringing Painting on Water to the students at IIT! Your engaging program was exactly what the students needed to build their creativity and enhance their understanding of leadership.

As I hope you noticed, the students loved the hands-on painting portion of the seminar. Routinely, students would build on other group member's creativity by learning from the previous person's painting and then add something unique to their own piece. There was little doubt that the students were able to build their "creative confidence" during this program. Further, the group piece allowed the students to work together - teaching communication, teamwork and compromise skills.

After 2 decades, I returned to IIT Bog to make a presentation for the students. The title was "A Journey of Senses and Soul."

Thanks all IIT students who took time out to attended the program despite the cold rain. Your creativity just began to flow. May you Goal With The Flow, continue with great success in your life ahead. Remember to practice the BASIC elements of creative problem solving skills. There is always a way.

Observation from Workshop on IIT Campus

As much as the professionals can be benefited on learning how to be more creative in problem solving, I am passionate and excited to apply this art-based learning process for university education as well.

Watching the students' smile and hearing their cheers and laughers for a few hours was priceless. Feeling their excitement when they pulled their first painting off the water and their appreciation of each other's work were marvelous. The creative smell of the innovative air at IIT was a dream come true.

A few students spoke up at the closing debrief. They shared their positive experience of artistic creativity and the learning process of building up the confidence. Also mentioned were the different perspectives to viewing a problem and the increased Chinese culture awareness.

Some students came up asking about where to get the ink and paper. One suggested that I supply them for sale as most students do not have easy access to transportation. Good point. Up till now, I avoided the merchandising by providing the attendees a pdf file of the supply list. This time, it motivates me to package up some supply for the next group, for the attendees who are excited and want to do more. And I would also provide them with a handout on site.

Most of the students came together and sat together. They got mixed pretty well with a color paper exercise. Then I gave them permission to photograph and video each other during the activities. It was a great ice breaker. They had a natural excuse to exchange email addresses in order to get in touch with one another later on. Some did express verbally that they were pleased to meet new people during the session. However, I spotted a few introverts. They were pretty quite. For future reference, I will give an explicit exercise for them to break their glacial position.

We ended a few minutes early to allow those who needed to leave for meetings. Some stayed and chatted, asked for an autograph and took photos.

Always ready to refine and improve, I look forward to knowing the students' perspective and suggestions. The real feedback comes from them. I am anxious to read what they wrote down and how they rated the session.

What a joy to watch a smart intelligent group of 85 future leaders in the process of learning new skill for Creative Problem Solving Technique. Painting on Water™ is a soft skill to compliment their tough drill of technical training.

It is highly possible that none of them will ever make a career of being an artist. It is highly unlikely that none of them will ever paint on water, ever again in their life.

However, it is highly possible that the hands-on experience that they had learned from the workshop will last for a life time. Feedback and comment will be posted in a later day.

Painting On Water™, developed by Amy Basic, is designed to teach you to think more creatively. This one of a kind, 100% hands-on session will offer you interactive, inspirational and spiritual insights. Amy Basic (also known as Amy Lee Segami) is both a mechanical engineer and a professional artist. With water as canvas, Segami draws on physics knowledge and Asian cultures to create art. Fluctuating between polarities of meaning, her works evoke the essence of human experience and its relationship to the universe. Since 1989, her unique and distinctive paintings have won numerous awards, featured in exhibitions and permanent collections.

Born in China, raised in Hong Kong, Segami is a naturalized US citizen. She earned a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology and studied many traditional Asian art forms. Best view of Shanghai is from the water. There are as many cruise lines as there are yellow cabs in New York City. Yes, even the water traffic is congested !!!

The literal translation of the blue sign is Old Dock. Guess it is more fashionable to call everything Cool. If there is one thing about Shanghai, the locals are quick to catch on anything and everything that's hip.

Contemporary Suminagashi

This blog is about the process of Painting On Water™, a contemporary version of the traditional Suminagshi. I started using the term Painting On Water™ 20 years ago at my first exhibition at Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, to describe the medium that I used to create my artwork.

Suminagashi (su-mee-Nah-gah-shee)
is an ancient art of flowing ink on the surface of the water, originated in China over 2,000 years ago. Like many traditional art forms, it was passed onto Japan and practiced by Shinto priests in the 12th century. In China, it was known as "Flowing Sand Paper."

In 1989, I was inspired by this nearly lost traditional art. It was an opportunity that I could make a contribution: to draw on my knowledge of science and traditional Asian cultures to create paintings that blend the disciplines of art and science, as well as the expressive traditions of east and west.
